What Levels of Care Are Available for Treating Bipolar Disorder?

Explore the best treatment options and types of effective care for bipolar disorder

Several treatment options have proved to be effective at helping women and girls achieve long-term recovery from bipolar disorder. As you conduct your search for the treatment options that are right for you or a loved one, it’s important to understand the variety of approaches that are available to you.

One of the benefits of receiving treatment for bipolar disorder at Timberline Knolls is that we’ll work with you to identify and explain all of the treatment options that may be right for you. The members of your treatment team will collaborate with you to select the treatment options that best meet your needs, and that will best prepare you for long-term success.

One of the first decisions related to treatment options for bipolar disorder is to determine which level or levels of care are right for you. Some Timberline Knolls residents receive care at multiple levels. Others complete their personalized plan for bipolar disorder at one level of care, then transition out of treatment. As with all aspects of your Timeberline Knolls experience, making this decision will be a collaborative, informed effort involving you and the members of your treatment team.

The most intensive treatment option at Timberline Knolls is our residential program. Women and girls who participate in residential care live at our center. They receive round-the-clock supervision and participate in full, structured treatment days. Your residential treatment experience at Timberline Knolls may include individual therapy, group therapy, recreation therapy, expressive therapies, family therapy, and a host of additional therapeutic and educational options.

Among its many benefits, residential treatment for bipolar disorder allows you to step away from the stresses and distractions of everyday life. When you select our residential treatment option, you have the time and support to focus solely on your health. The length of time that you stay in residential treatment for bipolar disorder at Timberline Knolls will be determined by your progress toward your personal goals.

Some women who complete residential treatment for bipolar disorder transition directly into our partial hospitalization program, or PHP. This treatment option allows you to retain a connection with a structured program while also beginning to reestablish an independent lifestyle. PHP may also be an appropriate treatment option for women who have not completed a residential program, but whose needs are not severe enough to require round-the-clock care.

Our partial hospitalization program accepts adult women age 18 and above. When you select this treatment option, you can expect to participate in six hours of treatment per day, five days per week. The most common element of treatment in our PHP is group therapy.

If you can benefit from a less intensive treatment option after completing treatment at Timberline Knolls, we can include a referral to an intensive outpatient program (IOP) or traditional outpatient services in your discharge plan.

The frequency and duration of IOP services varies from provider to provider. IOPs typically feature two to four treatment days per week, usually for two or three hours of group therapy each day.

Traditional outpatient services can include individual therapy or group therapy on a weekly, biweekly, monthly, or less frequent option. Traditional outpatient services are the least intensive treatment option for bipolar disorder, but they provide the greatest degree of flexibility.

What Is Effective Treatment for Bipolar Disorder?

Understand the most effective treatment for bipolar disorder

Identifying the most effective treatment options for a woman or girl who is struggling with bipolar disorder can be a challenge. One of the obstacles that many people encounter is the mistaken belief that there is one perfect treatment approach for bipolar disorder. In truth, what’s most important is finding the type and level of care that’s the best fit for the woman or girl in question.

The symptoms of bipolar disorder can vary significantly based upon a variety of personal factors. A host of other influences, such as the person’s treatment history and the presence of co-occurring mental health disorders, can also have a profound effect. Thus, the most effective treatment for bipolar disorder may vary significantly from person to person.
