What Levels of Care are Available for Treating Bulimia Nervosa?
Explore the levels of care for bulimia treatment at Timberline Knolls
Bulimia nervosa is a complex mental health condition that requires a multidisciplinary treatment approach. Like other forms of mental illness, bulimia affects your physical, mental, and emotional health. If you don’t receive professional help, the damage bulimia causes will likely become more severe over time.
By connecting with a quality bulimia treatment center like Timberline Knolls, you can get the individualized support you need to heal. Our compassionate, experienced staff will create a plan of care that reflects your unique experience of bulimia and features the treatment modalities that are best for you. No two girls or women will ever have the same path to treatment for bulimia, and we recognize that each person will experience their own individual challenges on the road to recovery.
If this is your first time exploring bulimia treatment options, you may be unsure of how to identify the most effective care for you. At Timberline Knolls, we thoroughly assess each girl and woman who seeks our support to determine the best course of treatment for her. We’ll review your medical and mental health history and inquire about any other aspects of your life that may impact your treatment experience and outcome. From there, we’ll assist you in selecting the treatment modalities and level of support you need, and begin the admissions process into that program.
Initially, many women find the 24/7 support of residential care to be an optimal first step on their recovery journey. Residential treatment gives you the opportunity to step away from the stress of daily life and focus fully on your recovery from bulimia. Your days will be filled with an array of carefully selected treatment options and medical support, along with plenty of time for quiet contemplation.
As with all other levels of care at Timberline Knolls, our goal is to provide you with the effective care that will empower you to continue your healing journey in the least restrictive environment possible. We know that residential care is just one important step in lifelong healing from bulimia, so from the day you arrive at our center, we begin planning for your eventual transition out of residential care.
Once your time in the residential treatment setting has come to a close, we’ll assist you in selecting a step-down level of care. You may enter a partial hospitalization program (PHP), which allows you to engage in treatment for several hours each day and then return home or to another residence in the evenings and on weekends.
Similarly, you may engage in an intensive outpatient program (IOP), which also allows you to experience the structured support of treatment during the day while you live independently in the evenings and on weekends. Both the IOP and PHP levels of care provide a balance of autonomy and support in which you’ll have opportunities to practice all the new skills you’ve learned in treatment in your daily life.
As you continue to progress in your recovery from bulimia, you may eventually transition into community-based outpatient care. This can include weekly meetings with a therapist, support groups, experiential therapies, or any other activity that supports you in maintaining your goals for recovery.

Understanding effective care for bulimia treatment
At Timberline Knolls, we know that in order for you to find success in recovery from bulimia, you need the treatment options that are best for you. What might be highly effective for one girl or woman might not be a good fit for another, and our goal is to supply you with the treatment modalities that best suit your precise needs.
Our approach combines the finest scientifically backed treatment modalities with a patient-centered planning process to identify the best bulimia treatment options for you. While you’ll never be viewed as merely the sum of your symptoms at Timberline Knolls, we work hard to ensure that each aspect of your health and well-being is addressed in treatment.
Effective treatment for bulimia includes interventions that address the cognitive aspects (e.g., negative thought patterns), the physical health complications (e.g., low body weight), and the emotional impacts (e.g., depressed or anxious mood) of the disease. Our programming is designed to uncover the root issues at the heart of your struggle with bulimia, and to provide a treatment experience that addresses the causes and not merely the symptoms.
During your time at Timberline Knolls, you’ll have access to a treatment team that understands the many ways that bulimia manifests in girls and women.
