Family Participation at Timberline Knolls
Family involvement is central to each resident's treatment and ongoing recovery. Our experience has shown that addiction, eating disorders and other mental illnesses are family diseases - and the best treatment outcomes result when a family recovery approach is used.
Facilitating healthy communication with family members is an important part of our approach to residential treatment. Scheduled family telephone times allow residents to both concentrate on their treatment regimen and maintain contact with their families. Scheduled telephone time also affords residents and their families to use new communication, to support each other in the recovery process, and to develop new problem solving skills.
Family members are additionally encouraged to visit on weekends and holidays once the resident is clinically stable. These visits allow each resident to integrate the recovery tools she learns at TK into her real life experiences. Many times family members leave these visits with a renewed sense of hope and gratitude for the experience of having their loved one back from the disease. This also helps pave the road for the difficult transition that occurs for our residents and their families at the end of residential treatment.
