What is Effective Treatment for Eating Disorders?
Understanding effective care for eating disorders
When determining what treatment modalities are best for you, the first step is identifying which level of treatment is the best fit according to your strengths, needs, and goals.
The most intensive level of care at Timberline Knolls is our residential eating disorder treatment program. At the residential level, you’ll benefit from round-the-clock care and a wide range of treatment options. Another benefit of residential eating disorder treatment is that you can step away from the stresses and distractions of daily life and focus completely on your health.
Your residential eating disorder treatment at Timberline Knolls will feature a variety of therapeutic and educational activities, all of which will involve the active participation of experienced professionals. Our staff members are the heart and soul of Timberline Knolls. You’ll work in close collaboration with experts who understand what you’re going through, and who are dedicated to providing you with the personalized treatment options that you deserve.
While you’re in residential treatment with us, you’ll live, learn, and participate in therapy alongside other women and girls who are also recovering from eating disorders. Within this supportive environment, you’ll be able to form beneficial bonds with others who are in similar situations. You can share your insights, learn from the experiences of others, and otherwise benefit from the power and promise of the eating disorder recovery community.
Typical length of stay in residential eating disorder treatment at Timberline Knolls is 30 to 60 days. The amount of time that you spend at this level of care will be determined by what’s best for you.
Women and girls who are struggling with particularly severe eating disorder symptoms may require acute inpatient programming. In order to be accepted into residential treatment at Timberline Knolls, you must have medical clearance. If your medical team determines that you have not achieved the level of stabilization that will enable you to fully engage in residential treatment, you’ll be referred to an inpatient setting.
In an inpatient treatment environment, you’ll receive both the medical and mental health support that you need to prepare you for a successful transition to a less intensive level of care. As with all treatment-related decisions, determining where you should start care is a matter of understanding your needs and identifying the placement that’s best for you.
Women and girls who can benefit from structured step-down support after residential eating disorder treatment may be best served at the partial hospitalization level. At Timberline Knolls, our partial hospitalization program, or PHP, includes six hours of therapy per day, five days each week. Group therapy is the main means of care at the PHP level. Our PHP accepts adult women age 18 and above.
Intensive outpatient programs, or IOPs, allow for increased personal freedom while still providing regularly scheduled, structured eating disorder treatment. IOPs typically meet for two or three hours a day, with programming usually offered two to four days per week. If you can benefit from time in IOP after completing eating disorder treatment at Timberline Knolls, we can include a referral in your discharge plan.
Traditional outpatient services and eating disorder support groups can both be vital components of your continued eating disorder recovery strategy. Traditional outpatient therapy, which usually consists of individual meetings with a therapist or counselor, can provide essential opportunities for you to process your successes and setbacks in a confidential, professional environment. Eating disorder support groups can be tremendous sources of information and encouragement. These support groups also offer an ongoing connection with the eating disorder recovery community.
As with IOP opportunities, referrals to traditional outpatient services or connections with eating disorder support groups in your area may be included in the discharge plan that you receive following your time in treatment at Timberline Knolls.
