It is difficult to overstate the degree to which eating disorders can impact a person’s physical, psychological, and social well-being. The complexity of this challenge can be influenced by the type of eating disorder that a woman develops, the presence of co-occurring mental health concerns, the quality and effectiveness of her personal support network, and a host of additional factors.
When a woman or girl chooses Timberline Knolls, all of these factors will be identified and assessed prior to our creation of her personalized treatment plan. This ensures that we’re aware of her specific challenges, and that we’re prepared to provide the types of therapy that will put her in the best position to achieve her goals.
Eating disorders affect each person in a unique way. At Timberline Knolls, we believe that each woman or girl who has developed an eating disorder deserves a unique, personalized plan featuring the best therapies that will put her on the path towards a healthier and much more hopeful future.
Depending upon each resident’s needs and goals, her personalized plan may include the elements described below.
One-on-one support during eating disorder treatment at Timberline Knolls
Every girl and woman who receives treatment for an eating disorder at Timberline Knolls will participate in several individual sessions during her time with us. These one-on-one sessions are optimal opportunities to process successes and setbacks, address issues that the resident may be hesitant to bring up in a group setting, and receive focused feedback and guidance from an experienced professional.
Strength in numbers when getting treatment for eating disorders at Timberline Knolls
Groups can be extremely beneficial experiences for women and girls who are recovering from eating disorders. Many adolescents and adult women who develop eating disorders experience intense feelings of shame, guilt, and isolation. Participating in groups can show these individuals that they are not alone, that others understand what they are going through, and that they won’t be judged negatively due to their self-defeating behaviors.
Groups are safe and supportive environments in which women and girls can get important information about eating disorders, share their thoughts and insights, and learn from the experiences of others. With the guidance and supervision of experienced professionals, group participants can practice positive communication skills and form supportive relationships with other members of the eating disorder recovery community.
Healing relationships through eating disorder treatment at Timberline Knolls
At Timberline Knolls, we understand how friends and family members can be affected by a woman’s struggles with an eating disorder. We also appreciate the important role that loved ones can play in the recovery process. When clinically appropriate and beneficial for the woman or girl who is in treatment, we encourage family members to participate in treatment to the greatest degree that they are able.
During family sessions, participants have the opportunity to process the impact that the eating disorder has had on their lives, and to learn how to function as a healthier and more supportive unit. To best meet the needs of all participants, family sessions may be held in person or via teleconference.
We also provide weekly training for family members to help them with skills like emotional support, healthy meal planning, and a host of additional topics related to successful long-term recovery from eating disorders.
Healing for the mind and body during eating disorder treatment at Timberline Knolls
Expressive therapies provide interactive opportunities for women and girls to address and process emotions in a healthy and productive manner. Examples of expressive therapies for women and girls who are receiving eating disorder treatment at Timberline Knolls include art therapy, dance/movement therapy, yoga, meditation, and recreational activities such as volleyball, basketball, badminton, soccer, and gardening. In addition to their therapeutic benefits, these activities can also help women and girls develop new interests, hone new skills, and form productive bonds with others.
Trauma-informed care during eating disorder treatment
Dialectical behavior therapy, or DBT, is a therapeutic approach that promotes the development of healthy capabilities in four key areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Within the context of eating disorder treatment at Timberline Knolls, DBT sessions can help women and girls overcome feelings of guilt or shame, adopt more effective coping methods, make better choices, and otherwise free themselves from negative behaviors related to past distress.
Healing from the effects of trauma during eating disorder treatment at Timberline Knolls
Many women and girls who develop eating disorders do so in the aftermath of abuse, neglect, or other traumatic experiences. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, or EMDR, is an integrative therapeutic technique that has proved to be extremely effective at helping to ease distress among individuals who have been struggling with the effects of untreated trauma. EMDR sessions can offer significant benefits to Timberline Knolls residents whose eating disorders are associated with trauma.
Medication management services when getting treatment for eating disorders at Timberline Knolls
In addition to helping women and girls overcome the impact of eating disorders, Timberline Knolls also provides comprehensive treatment for a wide range of co-occurring mental health concerns. If a woman or girl is struggling with mental health symptoms that may be alleviated via the appropriate use of prescription medications, we can incorporate pharmacological services into her personalized treatment plan. Our psychiatric staff members can provide all necessary support, including medication management services, throughout a resident’s time in treatment with us.
