In 1997, 16-year-old Jason Flatt unfortunately took his own life. What came out of that tragedy was a nationwide effort to raise awareness and provide programs that could end the “Silent Epidemic” of youth suicide.
About The Jason Foundation
The Jason Foundation, Inc. (JFI) was founded by Jason’s father, Clark Flatt, and has been providing the resources and services needed to identify and help youth who are at-risk for this ever-present problem.
Headquartered in Hendersonville, Tennessee, JFI aims to help communities across the country become more familiar with the warning signs of suicide, and prepares community members by offering the trainings and materials needed to help young people.
Youth Suicide in Illinois
In Illinois:
- Suicide is the third leading cause of death for middle and high school age youth (12 – 18).
- Suicide is the third leading cause of death for college age youth (18 – 22).
The Illinois Youth Risk Behavioral Survey reported:
- Almost 1 out of 5 young people seriously considered suicide in the past twelve months
- Almost 1 out of 8 young people attempted suicide in the past twelve months
