Addictions and disorders are not the domain of one ethnic group, culture, race, religion or gender. Therefore, they are not specific to one, two, or even three countries throughout the world. Psychiatric disorders and chemical addiction are a global issue.
How We Work with International Residents
Similar to the United States, many countries are experiencing a rapid escalation in eating disorders, substance use disorder (SUD), mood disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the female population. Opioid addiction, in the form of prescription drug abuse, is moving toward epidemic proportions in many nations. Often, these individuals go undiagnosed or untreated due to inadequate access to care. It is not uncommon for women and adolescent girls to start on the addiction path through an opiate prescription, then end their journey via death from heroin.
Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center is located immediately outside of Chicago, Illinois. Our beautiful campus offers a nurturing environment of recovery for women and girls ages 12 and older.
We provide effective, quality care to females struggling with:
- Eating Disorders
- Substance Abuse and Addictions
- Mood and Anxiety Disorders
- Co-occurring Disorders
- Self-Injury and other Process Addictions
Our program provides comprehensive, intensive treatment utilizing clinical approaches that include the 12-step recovery principles, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), expressive therapies, spirituality and family therapy.
Care for International Residents
We have provided treatment to individuals from Australia, Canada, Venezuela, England and Dubai. Perhaps the most critical aspect of our care to these women and girls is reflected in the word “individualized.” Our admissions specialists are highly trained to ensure travel to our campus is as simple and seamless as possible. Prior to physical admission, our clinical team is in touch with the woman or girl’s medical providers at home. In the case of a country with socialized medicine, we want to ensure that any required medication is mailed to our facility, so she will not need to purchase prescribed pharmaceuticals in the US. If English is not her primary language, we can provide interpreters.
Addictions and disorders often manifest in a similar fashion. A severely anorexic adolescent appears emaciated; a heroin addicted woman displays the classic signs of addiction. Although disorders and addictions may “look” the same, the story behind each of these is vastly different. The country and culture of origin influences each of our residents greatly. A girl may come from a culture in which thoughts, emotions, even physical pain, are rarely expressed, while another may come from a country where the citizenry are highly vocal in every aspect of daily life. These things matter. This is why we strive for complete sensitivity with each individual resident. Mode of dress, religious requirements and/or dietary restrictions—all of these are respected and accommodated for. Some women cannot work with a male therapist, others cannot consume meat—everything is taken into consideration and honored at Timberline Knolls.
In certain cases, a family will join a resident in the US and stay at a local hotel. If not, a resident from Toronto or another from London will engage in family therapy in the exact same fashion. Therapy sessions are conducted via video conferencing, to ensure the highest level of confidentiality. Our clinical staff is well aware that mental illness of any sort is a taboo topic—one associated with a high level of shame–in several cultures throughout the world. Therefore, this subject is handled with great delicacy and tact. Although visiting hours are typically on weekends, allowances are made if parents, siblings or a spouse are traveling from another country with limited travel opportunities.
This is a critical component of our programming; it is no less important for a resident from another country. From the day she admits, every possible step is taken to ensure she will receive the quality, ongoing care she requires upon her return home.
Regardless of language, skin color, spiritual preference, clothing choices or education and economic status, every single female with an addiction or disorder deserves excellent care. At Timberline Knolls, that is what we provide to all of our residents.
