At Timberline Knolls, we integrated NEDAwareness Week 2012 into the programming for residents who were in treatment with us during this important national annual event. Events and activities during the week brought residents and staff together for special on-campus programs that helped continue discussions about eating disorders, treatment and information on residential lodges and in group and individual treatment sessions. This year’s theme for NEDAwareness Week was “Everybody Knows Somebody”. Our staff members emphasized and encouraged the importance of speaking out and breaking through the isolation and secrecy of eating disorders.
Comfortable In Our “Genes”
On campus during NEDAwareness Week, a jean drive was held where individuals could bring in jeans that no longer fit to represent they are now comfortable in their “genes.” All jeans were donated to a local woman’s shelter after being displayed in TK’s dining hall.
Yoga Brings the Campus Together
Campus wide yoga and Nia classes were held with our yoga therapist, Livia Budrys, and Terese Sweeney, dietitian at TK and a certified Nia instructor. Nia is a sensory-based movement practice that leads to health, wellness and fitness. It empowers people of all shapes and sizes by connecting the body, mind, emotions and spirit.
At Timberline Knolls, we are never “silent” about the devastation that eating disorders can cause an individual as well as the family. We encourage our residents and staff to encourage the increased focus on conversations started during NEDAwareness Week. We hope to embody the spirit of this important Week throughout the entire year and continue to raise awareness of the dangers of eating disorders and the need for early intervention.
